Le Balcon
Named after a play by Jean Genet, Le Balcon was founded in 2008 by a conductor (Maxime Pascal), a sound engineer (Florent Derex), a pianist and vocal coach (Alphonse Cemin) and three composers (Juan Pablo Carreño, Mathieu Costecalde, Pedro García Velásquez). It reinvents itself with each project, in its line-up as in its relationship to staging and electronics.
Its repertoire spans every period in the history of music, with a particular affinity for the 20th and 21st centuries: Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, Weill and Brecht's The Threepenny Opera, Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise and Levinas's La Métamorphose are emblematic of its path.
In September 2026, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Le Balcon closed Stockhausen's Licht, the Seven Days of the Week with Mittwoch aus Licht, a cycle begun in 2018 and unveiled opera by opera each autumn.
The season continues at the Musikverein in Vienna with Jonathan Harvey's Bhakti, then with La Dixième remix after Pierre Henry, an adaptation by Mauro Lanza and Maxime Pascal, at the Théâtre du Châtelet and at Points communs, before Fausto Romitelli's Professor Bad Trip at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Le Balcon is in residence at Points communs, the national stage of Cergy-Pontoise and the Val d'Oise. It is supported by the French Ministry of Culture, the Fondation d'entreprise Société Générale, patronage from the Caisse des Dépôts, the City of Paris and the Singer-Polignac Foundation.
